Seattle, WA—Robert M. Calvani, AIA, NCARB, was elected secretary of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at its 97th Annual Business Meeting. Most recently, Calvani served as the director of NCARB’s Western Conference (Region 6), which is comprised of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

“I look forward to partnering with Member Boards to improve our programs and services, and searching for fresh avenues to serve NCARB’s Record holders,” Calvani said.

Calvani was appointed to the New Mexico Board of Examiners for Architects in 2003 and has served as chair and vice-chair. He has also been a member of various sub-committees, including the Joint Practices Committee, which combines representatives from architecture, engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture.

Calvani has served on NCARB committees since 2004, including several related to the development of the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®), the national test developed by NCARB and taken by candidates seeking licensure in the United States. These include the Examination Committee and ARE Subcommittee, where he was coordinator on the Building Systems section and later became chair. In addition, Calvani helped develop the next version of the exam, ARE 5.0, by serving on the Test Specification Steering Committee and as chair of the Test Specification Task Force.

The New Mexico architect was a member of the 2012 Practice Analysis Task Force Steering Committee and team leader of the Practice Analysis Task Force, which conducted an in-depth study of the profession’s evolution. Calvani has been involved with NCARB’s regional leadership, serving on the Executive Committee and as chair of the Western Conference. During his tenure as the director of the Western Conference, he continued to serve on numerous NCARB committees, including the Audit Committee, the Intern Advisory Committee, and the Continuing Education Committee.

Calvani, who earned architectural degrees from both the University of New Mexico and the University of California, Los Angeles, is founder and president of NCA Architects, LLC in Albuquerque, NM. He has held an NCARB Certificate since 1981 and is licensed in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada.
